My story with Leica began with the Leica Q1. I had come from a Sony Rx1RII. It produced nice enough images, if not a little too boring and a little too digital. That camera also had maybe the worst battery life that I had ever experienced up to that point. But - I loved the size. Having a full frame camera in my bag at all times soon became something that I couldn’t go without. This led to me to the Original Leica Q around 2017. That camera became my first love. After several years of making images and bonding with it - I eventually “upgraded” to the Q2, but I was never as happy with the sensor. I found that the added dynamic range hurt my images more than it helped. I missed my dark shadows and *blown out* highlights, and all other imperfections that came along with a digtial sensor that was announced over 8 years ago. The Q2’s high megapixel RAW file sizes and different color science always proved problematic for me. I finally bit the bullet a few weeks ago and picked up another Q1, and i’m right back at home with it. It’s still to this day one of my favorite sensors that Leica has produced. I find the speed of operation and autofocus performance to be totally adequate for my day to day needs - but i’ll be the first to admit the EVF is starting to show its age. I also find 28mm to be a little too wide for me for every day use (I keep my Q locked on the 35mm crop mode at all times - and i’ll very occasionally recompose a bit in post if needed) - but these few signs of age are a fine trade off for me for a camera that I love having with me every single day.
